how to replace shift boot on a 2000 S80 T6

My old black leather shift boot looks horrible, so I got a new one. Came with a little plastic ring. I'd like to replace it myself. Can anyone guide me to resources or instructions on how to do this? Thanks!

Volvo calls it a gear shift gaiter. Anyway, click on the link below to download a PDF file with the instructions. Read through all of it because all of it isn't necessary to do what you want, but unfortunately a lot of it is:

Well, I finally succeeded in removing the gear shift knob! Found a position with enough leverage, kneeling backward on the passenger seat, and pulled it up. Almost put my elbow through the windshield! Anyway, turns out that the little rod that goes down the middle? You know the one? It broke. So now the car is stuck in park, and can't be driven. I'm getting it towed to my mechanic tomorrow, where I am sure they will all have a good-natured laugh at my expense.
