1994 850 coilovers

Post by chopss »

Good morning. I have a 94 Volvo 850 estate with some pretty worn suspension. When pricing out replacement springs, struts, shocks, and strut bearings, coilovers start to look like a better value. The problem is that I live in the land of ice and snow. So I am looking for a kit that would leave the option of stock height or, even better, the ability to lift it an inch or so. any ideas? Thanks, Mike.

Lifting the body of your 855 an inch would change the handling characteristics and probably mess up your snow traction. Most of the roads around the Twin Cities are plowed clear within 24 hours of a snowfall anyway. It is the ice that is the problem, and that can be solved with a good set of winter tires that are designed for the condition.

I suggest replacing your suspension with OE. If you habitually carry heavy loads in the rear, then get some progressive springs from IPD. But new OE springs will probably be all you need, along with struts and shocks. Don't forget the heavy duty spring seats or use XC90 spring seats for the struts.

If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.
