96 850 GLT Coil replacement, is it good PM?

Post by joe_pinehill »

My 96 is on its original coil. Is it worth replacing it as Preventative Maintenance?

What's the prefered replacement, Meyle ? Beck Arnley from Rock Auto is $82.

Most 93-98 850, S/V70 cars don't have ignition coil issues.
If you are worried, then go to junk yard with 10-mm socket/ratchet and pull an ignition coil for $10 and leave it in the trunk as sparer.

This is what I did. BTW, make sure it is Bosch and nothing else, a used Bosch is still a good item.

For the record: Beck Arnley is a total crap shoot. They buy parts from other vendors and rebox them. So you may get one brand one time, another brand the next. The only way I would buy anything Beck Arnley is if I looked at the part and recognized the brand, and knew it to be decent.

I like the tested $10 junkyard part in the trunk idea.
But if you are looking for preventative maintenance then put in a new Bosch at 150K miles .

A new Bosch Ignition Coil (Volvo PN 1275174) is not cheap.
It is about $150.

I have three or four from the junk yard for diagnostics. They are all original Bosch, and usually let me know that the coil was not the issue.
They seem almost indestructible ( Bosch ) and I would not buy any different unless you are going over 300 hp. and need a hotter spark.
Preventive maintenance? I would have to say no.

Do replace all plug and coil wires with the original Bougicord if they are over 10 years old and you will not be disappointed.

1+,

This is my take at 150K miles...

Spark Plugs: Bosch copper $2/each
Bougicord: $60 at 150K
Cap/Rotor: Bosch only, about $60
TOTAL = $130

These are the best $130 to spend for 1993-1998 Volvo 850, S70, V70 (1999+ models do not use cap/rotor...).

The Ignition Coil: I went to junk yard and got a used Bosch ign coil for $10 and put it in the trunk.
Chances are I will never need to replace the ignition coil...but who knows...

After I did this to the wagon, I also did all the above as far as ignition.
I smile every time I turn the key.

The wires, plugs, rotor, cap. Wires, Bougicord (Fr.), and everything else Bosch appropriate for the 850 will also put a smile on the owner/drivers face. It worked well for my '93 Sedan as well as the Turbo Wagon.
