1998 S70 GLT car stalled MVSOLVED, IAC cleaning

Post by terris1859 »

and will not start back up. Had to have it towed home. I just got this car in febuary and it is a 1998 S70 GLT, ran good , no problems except for us having to change the power steering pump and rear brake pads.
I was driving along at about 35 mph and all of a sudden I could feel a little sort of vibration or the motor sputtering like maybe it was running out of gas
, but it is not that because there is 1/4 of a tank of gas. And if I try to start it now it acts like it wants to start but it is not getting enough gas. so I did some research Since this happened and we have tested the fuel relay by taking it out and putting a wire in I think it was 15 and 87 and it does the same thing either way - runs for about 10 minutes and then acts like it ran out of gas and stalls. We could not hear the fuel pump kick on so we changed that but still the same thing happens runs for about 10 minutes and then quits does anyone know what I should check next?

Staying with the fuel supply diagnostics, at the end of the fuel rail there is a Schrader valve. Keeping your eyes out of the line of fire, use a small screw driver or similar tool to depress the valve stem. If your fuel supply is working, there will be a potent squirt from the valve. If it just dribbles, you might have a plugged filter, which on the 850's is in front of the passenger side rear wheel. I think 98's are the same. That's a pretty easy replacement. You can find a link on this site. If yours hasn't ever been changed that's a likely possibility.

Otherwise, as others will say, pull the codes and you'll find plenty of help on this site.
Good luck.

If you jump #15 and #87 and still have problem, then the fuel pump may be bad.

To test fuel pump, get a good digital Ohmmeter.
See Step #5 below.
Fuel Pump winding has a resistance of about 1.0-1.5 Ohms. Mine was 1.0 Ohms (measured via 31 and 87 on the socket).

problem solved -- i showed my husband the thread on here about cleaning the idle air control valve he did what it said and now my car starts up and runs fine . Thanks everyone for your help with my problem, now all I have to do is figure out how to fix the passenger side door so it will open from the outside and find a drivers side front turn signal lens. do people sell parts like that on here?

For the turn signal light (you will need the whole light, the lens is not separable), try placing a WTB (want to buy) ad here: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... um.php?f=7. Or visit a junkyard. Any 98-00 S70 or V70 uses the same light; maybe the C70 is the same too?

well I guess my problems are not over yet, now the car will start and run fine but if you shut it off it will not restart. I drove it for 3 days with no problems, went out to start it up in the morning of the 4th day and it would not start. We checked the relay and the fuel pump and both are working. So I let it set for about 5 days and went out this morning and it started, shut it off twice and it started back up, then I got brave and drove it around the block, came back home shut it off and it won't strt up again any ideas what the problem might be now.

On edit - it sounds like this is a new problem, based on the symptoms.

It is time to go back to basics,

Compression
Ignition
Fuel
Timing

Given its running well once it starts you can skip compression and timing for the moment.

How old are the ignition parts - plugs cap wires ?

If you are only having warm start problems, it could be the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor - when they go, it fools the engine into thinking the engine needs gas for a cold start and then floods it.

btw - your problems with your Volvo officially ended on May 12 2014... :D

yes I think it is only a warm start issue, I will let you know when it is completely cooled off, then I will try to start it. We haven't done a tune up yet , haven't had the extra money. I called around to some of the junk yards around my area to see if I could find a used ect sensor and no one has any volvo parts they said those cars are not too common around here. But I see they have them at advance auto, I will order one online if you think that is what the problem most likely could be. I can't afford to buy parts that I don't absolutely need right now.

I went out this morning and the car started, but it seemed to be idling a little rougher than normal, so we decided to unplug maf sensor to see what would happen, car still ran the same after it was unplugged, when it was plugged back in it immediately killed the motor, does this mean the maf sensor is not working?
