So I work on my girlfriends rather beat down 2002 S40 because I recommended the car after a test drive. It's been full of problems but none too difficult. We had the "limp home" mode issue and the dealer, Boston Volvo, quoting multiple problems with an overall 6k price tag. I used the very helpful forums here and replaced the TCM. Limp mode problem solved. A few months later the check engine light came on. I ignored it until inspection. I reset the light using the battery method and it is back on immediately, on the first start, several attempts. I have tried to realign the TCM using my best guess. BTW the car always runs fine. So, I now feel like I need get the alignment tool: 999 5475.
Some background. I spent many months getting a Vida/Dice system set up. Again many thanks to MVS posts. It works great on my S60 but not on the S40. After purchase, Yolonda from an alibaba seller emailed me and said it would be another $15 to get a tool that worked with V50 diesels. I'm an American, so I didn't care about diesels. I now feel like whatever that issue is why this DICE doesn't work with this S40. When she asked, I didn't even have Vida running so I didn't want to spend even more money on one of the more expensive DICE models. Many regrets now. It's not easy to return stuff to China.
So the questions. Where can I buy the alignment tool. I think that's the issue. Or perhaps I bent the whole connector thing to the gear shift, but I would like to start with the alignment. Your always valuable and appreciated thoughts.
2002 S40 TCM replacement - the alignment tool
So the correct acronym is the PNP, transmission position sensor, not the TCM. I had the control modules on the brain for other repairs. The Volvo dealers were not helpful in ordering the part. One wanted me to both prepay and also they couldn't tell me how much it would cost (??). Another told me they order the part from Kent Moore. A google of Kent Moore is not helpful. Calling a few specialty tool websites and using the Volvo part number, a salesperson gave me the number directly to Kent Moore 800-345-2233 and their Volvo specialist 800-345-3399. The tool is $32 + shipping.
Yes precopster, it's the PNP. I read about the reverse method of alignment but with the battery removed and several other components, I didn't feel comfortable sending a signal through the car with jumper cables. My real question was how to buy Volvo specialty tools and I found at least one solution.

I think you mean the PNP. A TPS is generally known as a throttle position sensor. You are referring to the rotary switch which tells the transmission computer which gear is selected?? Look at MVS posts here for alignment techniques.
Mine is to place car in reverse at dusk and centre the PNP while rotating it to see the centrepoint of reverse light actuation. You could use a mirror for this purpose also.
