2000 Volvo V70 XC Angle Gear Box / Transfer case

Post by Fyroe »

I recently had my angle gear / transfer case fail and through reading, decided going into FWD was a tolerable option so I paid $500 to a backyard mechanic to get it done. He removed the angle gear box and the drive shaft. I drove about 60 miles and started hearing a rattling noise and then after parked realized I leaked massive ATF fluid into my driveway. Under inspection, I realized the bevel gear is just floating around on the axle and not plugged into the transmission whatsoever. From what I've read, this piece is secured extremely well and doesn't just come off. My question is: Is the angle gear box / transfer case supposed to go back on to seal up the transmission with the bevel gear? And is the only part that should have come off was the drive axle? Am I leaking ATF out of where the bevel gear should be attached? Anybody have an extra car I can borrow tomorrow?

Err, yeah
You should just have removed the propshaft only. You cannot do what you did!
Takes way less than an hour on a lift
You overpaid an idiot

The rear transmission casing for FWD vs AWD is different therefore you can't just put in a longer driveshaft and hope that won't happen. Really sorry to see this outcome. Take it back.

That's what happens when you try to save time and money.....The angle gear box is "mangled" in his words. Will I have problems with this non functioning part? Will it go back on easily?

There is a double lipped seal and I think it is on the transmission side of things. The inner part of the seal seals the axle shaft and the outer part seals the sleeve that used to go between the transfer case and the transmission. What that seal does is effectively blocks the different lubricants in the transmission and the transfer case from mixing. As I recall, from just looking at things and not measuring, the outer diameter of the double seal was larger than a standard FWD seal but there may be a seal available that would match up to the outside diameter of the hole and the diameter of the axle shaft. If you could locate such a seal you could eliminate the sleeve altogether.

You might be able to get the present setup to work if you could fashion a retainer to hold the sleeve that is just presently just rattling around on the axle in place, firmly seated in the transmission. Even if you could fashion such a retainer you likely need to replace the seal. Hopefully your transmission didn't get damaged by running so low on fluid.

Appreciate you Lee and big ups to MVS! I'm new to forums and I'm going to try to edit the title of this post. I will let you know how it goes when I attempt to get this back together.

that I can just loctite the sleeve into place and that would eliminate my leak possibly? Or do you think I should clean out my angle gear and just reattach the empty box to act as the seal?

Things would need to be really clean to get loctite to set up securely but that might just work.
