+1 on this advice. I pulled the turbo off my 94 850 before scrapping it and it was not an easy job. All the fittings will likely be rusted/stuck and some are in very awkward positions. Do the easy part first and see what happens you might just save yourself a lot of work and headache.jblackburn wrote:Fix the coolant lines first and see if it still spins/boosts.
If not, pick up a used turbo at a junkyard. Check it for play - if there's little-no horizontal play, stick it in the car and don't worry about it.

Well, things got worse. I was hesitant to let the original place do the work and after talking to another mechanic he convinced me to bring it to his place to make sure the head gasket wasn't blown. We got it over there and he was able to fit some temporary cooling lines to do a short test run with water. Low and behold, the head gasket is shot as well. Good thing I didn't throw $1200 at the turbo.
This same guy will do a used engine install for me for roughly $750 and it seems that finding something decent with a bit lower mileage might be a reasonable way to go. What are some good sources for a salvaged engine?

I inspected my turbo coolant hose, it is bulging. I bought all the hoses and washers, will install soon.
I'd recommend everyone to have a look this.

Actually there are two of them, check (and likely replace) them both.

Yes, I bought both but only the hose adjacent to the turbo is bulging a bit on both the 850 and S70. I noticed that the screw clamp can't be accessed from under the car, I will try from top or try turning it.erikv11 wrote:Actually there are two of them, check (and likely replace) them both.

@mecheng,
Actually you can access the clamp from below. The key thing is to get a very long screwdriver (I have the 16-inch long screwdriver, $8 at hardware store, or Sears) and push on the clamp to turn it so the screw faces you.
All the tips/tricks are below. BTW, use Volvo OEM hoses only!
