The software also stops almost ALL of the potentiometer movement

So if the potentiometer does not move, how is the throttle response activated? Will it stay at a preset "open/close" position? I don't understand. The fuel consumption might go up too?
And F#@!k, I just got the engine check light on with the message "Emission System Service Required" today, out of the blue, just when I left work. I am not sure what this is. Any ideas?

You need to get your codes read...if you don't have a code reader, AuzoZone or most any other auto parts store can read them for you. Fortunately emissions codes can be read by just about any OBD-II scan tool. Read or have them read them and report back what you find.

Easy come, easy go... Just when I wanted to take off to a friend of mine who has the OBD II, the message dissapeard (same as it came on). Strange to say at least, but I don't complain about the fact that it's gone. Has anybody else experienced that before?

Car goes through some tests at start-up. If issues aren't found then the light doesn't come on....but since it's been set recently, if there are problems sensed, it will come right back on....very typical of ETM and related issues. If your ETM is going, then it WILL re-appear.

vizigot,

If your ETM is going bad you will have episodes of "Performance Reduced" warnings, the car will have limited power and not exceed 25-30 mph, but will be fine after it sits for awhile. This means you're in the precursor stage to total failure. The ETM will not get better.

For $100 the dealer will check codes on your car. If the ETM is bad, no charge for checking, no charge for new ETM and upgrade. At 110K your car is overdue for an ETM failure (IMHO). If its not the ETM, you might find out something else.

Autozone will loan you an OBDII reader for nothing (you leave a refundable deposit) and you can find code info on the Net.

That's what my car did. The emission problem light came on and would shut off (randomly). Once I got the software upgrade I haven't had it come on and hopefully won't.

So I have my car booked for an appointment at the dealer to upload the ETM software (cuz I had that emission problem light already a few times come and go - no problems with the car, no power loss, no engine noises, no nothing - just the warning message).
Now having the upgrade done, will the ETM still fail at 110 miles, or so?

should last longer...less movement inside to cause damage.
Don just posted about this yesterday in the ETM section. Take a look.

I'm new here but already had great feed-back on a prob .... looking at the topics I see that MadeInJapan said

"""If the ETM stops working, Volvo is obligated to replace it for the first 10 years or 200K miles...which ever comes first."""

I had a major bill from my Volvo dealer last Jan for replacing the ETM ... never did they say anything about this being replaced at Volvo's cost. Can someone tell me where this info is posted - I'll take it up with the guys at Volvo for a refund .... ADDITIONALLY the same symptons are starting to repeat .... I've not yeyt reached the ""ETM going into limp-home mode"" but the Idle speed is 'jumpy/serges' and when at idle the engine has stopped a couple of times.
