Old post but...
Is there anything one can do "preventively"?
1. Relocate it to inside the car?
2. Clean the connectors and somehow seal it tight?
PS: According to another DIY (see the excellent link below)...

Finally I have some time to remove the FPM for inspection.
1. RR wheel removed, car on jack stand/floor jack etc.
2. Remove 10-mm plastic nut and folded liner over (I used the RR door to jam it out of the way).
3. Some fine sand particles around connector but no corrosion. So after 9-10 years in Nebraska, not bad at all considering that this State uses mostly sand > salt in the winter.
4. I cleaned all sand particles, apply a tiny smear of grease to keep corrosion out, buttoned everything back together.
