2004 xc90 T6 replacing front drive shaft

Post by inraybans »

I am replacing a front drive shaft on a 2004 XC90 T6. I have the lower wishbone removed from the ball joint and the shaft removed from the hub. Can I just pull the shaft straight out of the trans casing or is there any screws, clips to remove first ?

A video I looked at showed on a 2004 a Bearing holder but I do not have that on my car. Passenger side front.

Anyone have any instructions would be most grateful. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE

Both the drivers and passengers shafts are only held in place on the trans side by the male spline on the trans a good tug will get it to pop out of its hole. Then there is of course, the bolt at the outside joint. The drivers side will want to leak trans fluid out the seal (which I would recommend replacing while you are there). Remember to replace a bit that is lost.

As for the lower control arm - the ball joint you should have removed the two bolts and used a drift to get the ball joint to separate from the knuckle. Keep the sway-bar link in place, but remove the outer tie rod from the knuckle it will give you some extra room to move around.

I have found that loosening the ball joint from the lower control arm and loosening the two bolts on the control arm bushing make putting the ball joint back in place MUCH easier (use a long bar to force the LCA down while moving the knuckle back in place); after putting the Half shaft back in place of course.

Good Luck!
