1996 Volvo N/A 850 Puff Of Smoke On Crank

Post by mrlowkey »

Help, i have a 1996 Non-Turbo Volvo 850. It seems to send a puff of smoke up intermittently on a crank. Occasionally it will smoke when at an idle. The smoke looks like what would happen around the oil dipstick, when the PCV system is clogged, could this be the same situation? Or possibly blow-by as a friend told me its called? In any case what would be the remedy to correct this problem? Thankyou in advance Todd

If it only does it on a cold start, after the car has been parked overnight, and then runs pretty much smoke free it would most likely be bad valve seals. If it doesn't matter if the car has been parked or not then I would lean toward a clogged PCV. If the PCV has never been serviced it needs it anyway.

Blow-by would show up as low compression and poor performance.

I had the same issue and it was the PCV. There are good video instructions to be found on these internets. ;-)

From my experience from a cold start smoke is leaky valve steam seals in the engine. When idling and then requesting more engine power and blowing smoke is a blocked pcv.

If you plan on keeping the car for a while look more into diagnosing and having the pcv repaired. It can't hurt and is necessary to proper operation.
