2001 v70xc transmission shot or sensor?

Post by volvo in ny »

my car started to shake a little when accelerating slowly from a stop. Then it would dirve normally. Then it would sit there and I didnt need to use the brakes, it wouldnt roll forward. Last night while driving the engine jumped up to 4000 rpm and it felt like it slipped into neutral. Only babying the gas pedal got me up to road speeds. Goin up hill was ridiculous. I also found that there was no reverse or neutral. The check engine light came on and the "PRND" dissapeared from the dash. With the car cooled after two hours it drove a little better at the start,,but ....the coolant temp gauge jumped to its normal spot in a matter of seconds...then the tranny started slipping.
My question is,,someone mentioned a sensor or connection...I think the tranny is shot....what do you guys think?
p.s. if its shot..im wont be fixing it

It's unlikely though possible the PNP switch is faulty. Statistically speaking the '01s were prone to premature failure so you may want to have someone who knows these cars look at it with the right diagnostic equipment.

thanks,,this pnp switch...is there anything I can do to check it? I bought this car used maybe in '11 and when driving it home on day one I noticed the trans bump a little in 2nd,,told the used car dealer and he sent it to be fixed..with a six month warranty. It looks like finally their fix stopped working. So,,I'm guessing its the trans.
I just ran outside to look at the fluid. With the engine cold, the fluid was high on the yellow dipstick and the color of used motor oil (darkish brown)

Well they overfilled the tranny which couldn't have done it any good not to mention run it on old fluid.

When trainnies go bad like this everyone tells the guy to change fluid. It only wastes money......but in this case I'm going to suggest it due to the colour.

Use 3309 rated fluid like Mobil 3309 from Amazon.

Do not undo any large bolts on top of the transmission!! This will cause loss of another gear. Fill from the dipstich tube ONLY.

There's a 24mm drain nut underneath that will release 3.5 litres. In your case 12 litres of fluid will improve the colour. A series of drains an fills with a short drive in between is the method to mix new with old. If there's no improvement start looking for an indie Volvo shop to check the PNP ( not a DIY job on this model)

Yeah I agree JRL, statistically it's probably 99.9%

Let's hope he IS the one in one thousand.

What's the mileage on this car?

????

ok,,,I just searched the etm. I dont think this is the problem at all. That is more of an engine idle problem. Mine idles fine,,it just wont move until I rev the engine past 3000rpm...then I can tickle the gas pedal to keep the car at , lets say, 30mph. If I come to a stop and have to start there is the feeling that I'm just going to sit there revving the engine. Then you feel the bump and it slowly starts to go. Neutral was still drive and reverse went nowhere. I was only able to push the car backwards by turning the engine off. Then it rolled backwards,,shifter in reverse.
All the while the engine moans like its got a rag shoved in the exhaust.
