ok.. I guess the jackhole dealer that said he'd have it fixed no matter what it was just poured some junk in it.

An extreme case of neglect by the owner and service.precopster wrote:EXACTLY the same symptoms as my '01 XC70 last year. No reverse and forward drives OK. Neutral had the car creeping forward as did Park. There was a cracked C1/C2 drum and original blackened fluid and many friction plates worn to metal. Reverse and 1st gear plates were fused. The tranny is still on my bench. Last owner was a single mom.
Thing is it only had 160, 000kms or 100, 000 miles.
Not sure if OP is like this.

well,,I can say that when I bought the car it was in very good shape for the year and mileage. I cant tell you about the previous owner/s. The dealer I bought it from was a distant family -in-law. He said he had it fixed with a six month warranty. I drive the car maybe 100 miles a week. I know how to work on american cars (currently rebuilding an 81 trans am). I dont think I neglected it. I do know....I will not be a volvo/foreign car owner. I'm not crazy about a car that if you break the rear view mirror and toss it, the car wont start. Or remove engine accessories to change a bulb. Or the passenger floor got wet and now my airbag light is on,,,$3000 to fix this. It is built like a brick $hithouse and was fantastic in the snow. But my jeep wrangler was more fun and better in the snow. And way cooler looking.
If the fluid change doesnt help the car out,,,,this car will go in the garbage pail.

I can fix 10 SRS Volvo modules with $3,000
I bought my 2001 XC70 with a known blown transmission for $1,100
Did you research the 2001 model year? Seems a little reading could have saved a lot of heartache.

it doesn't corrode, someone said in one of the post.
wipe it clean, and try again.
post a picture, like Mike does.

well,,road salt sure did mess up that trans tag then.
the mechanic said he needs to replace the seat belt system, the air bag sensor,,the seats and some more stuff and it would be around $3000. this happened after hurricane sandy. And $1,100 is great as the insurance company gave me $7000 for the car but it was still driveable. I still overpaid.
anyway...I got it to autozone and these are the codes...their computer was down and couldnt decipher them.

P1618
all i found were the first three meant the wrong gear or something

Please don't quote me as saying something I said when I didn't say anything.
Corrosion??? I don't see anything about corrosion and I certainly didn't make any comment about that.
I said your tranny is shot, period and I still do!
1618 is a particularly nasty non communication code

well...i dont know where this post went wrong,,something about my tag being corroded....no clue what responses to that were about...............
Anyway,,this is where I'm at.
I pulled the trans drain plug and 6 quarts of black came out. I just added 4 quarts of fluid. I still need to check the level as the dipstick is just carrying the fluid and i cant tell. But......Park is park. Reverse is nothing now....neutral is forward and so is drive. With the car parked in my driveway,,,drive feels very good as if I can go somewhere with it. I might push it backwards out of the driveway and see if I can go around the block.
Last time it was driving it was very slow at high rpms with no power. i'll give results of this semi fluid change.

i just came back from driving around the block. It feels like the engine is ''congested''. It drove fine from 1st to 2nd slips big into 3rd and goes no higher. I can get neutral to become neutral but it still turns into drive. Reverse feels like I'm power braking it, and goes not an inch. If I had reverse,,,I would try taking this to work and call it a day.
