I did happen to pick up the JTC-4225 to do the ball joints- worth every penny. Anyway everything is in place but I am an inch short on getting the ball joint back into the control arm. Seems to me the CV shaft is not allowing me the swing to make it happen. Have the spring compressed. Saw one or two vids on this and don't see the issue- what am I missing here?
01 V70 LCA install not going as planned...
I've done some reading on this and am a bit confused. Doing lower control arms, etc. on an '01 V70 wagon. I've done many 850's and figured it wouldn't be much different- things are flopped around a bit but NBD.

Alright, so I'll answer my own question. As I mentioned, I have seen various write ups and vids on this with different approaches. It is NOT necessary to remove the knuckle to do ball joints in these, nor is it necessary to remove the outer CV shaft bolt although I see this repeatedly in the vids and write ups.
I got by my problem described above by removing the top knuckle bolt to the strut and barely loosening the bottom one which allows the knuckle to pivot to the inside. This got me the clearance needed to re-install the ball joint to the lower control arm which was already installed in the bottom of the knuckle with the JTC-4225 above (GREAT TOOL). It all fell together after that with minimal effort. While a bit different than the 850, not by much...

Very timely as I have new set of LCA waiting for install. Last time I did this I removed both strut bolts and the half shaft. I will try your method of removing just the top strut bolt and pivoting the LCA into place.
2003 XC70 230K and counting..,
