1995 850 Loss of power, weird noises, oil light blinks

Post by Zorenstein »

Hi all-

Yesterday I was driving my 850 5 speed. I passed some people in 3rd gear and just kept accelerating to get a speed rush (I'm sure you all know). However, during the rush I decided to shift too late. Going 95mph (7000rpms) in 3rd gear and the engine just cuts out, then when I go to shift into 4th, the engine revs super loudly. Everything seemed fine after that until I went to turn down a different road. I shifted into neutral, took the turn, shifted into 2nd, thats when real issues started. The car all of the sudden felt like it had no power (through any gears) and it started making a lot of bad noises. First noise I noticed was a scraping, however nothing was (or is) hanging off or leaking. Next was a weird grinding noise and then finally a loud clunking/thumping. Also, the oil light just started flashing light crazy. Lastly, the car had trouble starting up, but still starts, just doesn't sound healthy. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you all-

I would first check the oil level and then change the oil and see how many chunks of metal come out into the drain pan.

How far past redline did you get?

Sounds like a rod knock.

Time for a new motor.

7k means you over-revved the engine.

If you take that video into the store, you can probably get some sympathy booze.

That's a nasty bottom end knock. If you rev the motor gently, you will hear the knock change slightly as the crank is loaded and unloaded , to confirm

A good used motor us probably your cheapest option to keep the car on the road.
