1997 855 Sway links

Post by Jush »

I was just wondering if anyone knew of a replacement part that had a hex part on the stud so you can tighten the links to maximum potential, I can't get a wrench to stay tight on the small style ones that only allow for a single wrench position.

for example, what I would want is something like this: Image

But all I can find are ones like this: Image

I have replaced the links 2 times now and since I can not tighten them to their full potential they still rattle around due to not being tight enough..

Unless anyone has any tricks..
Thanks

By design, these also come with counter-hold for a 16mm wrench to fit, right next to the boot.
cn90 says to use bicycle wrench - it has worked for me.
Lemförders come with torx on stud for counter-hold.

Take a look at Meyle HD from FCP:
http://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-s ... -v70-850-1

Heavy duty--bigger shaft, heads, studs, and importantly--bigger flange nut with more bearing area on the strut bracket.
'98 S70, 230k, purchased new in '98
'96 855 GLT, 163k, purchased lightly used in '99

I have bicycle wrenches I used to work on bikes for a long time I remember trying to use one but I can't remember if it fit in the space provided on the strut mount.

I would like a bigger hex to hold because then I can use my impact gun to keep them tight as heck.

I like the Meyles and instead of using the 16mm open ended design they use a T40 which you can purchase with a 3/8 inbuilt drive.

No need to tighten than recommended.
It uses lock-nut, and torque on these nuts are normal.
For $20 each, it can be replaced with relative ease every few years.

Thanks for the video Rob, although I am familiar with the replacement procedure.

I guess I'll just have to try again.

Fun fact - Those thin bicycle wenches are called "cone nut wrench(s)" Typically used to adjust hub tightness on loose-pack bearing wheel hubs!
