My factory dipstick lasted 14y/140K. So not bad at all.
Chances are I don't keep the car that long (280K) to need another dipstick.

Well, the original one maybe... but the new ones are trash! 30K Tops! Why do you think I have to replace my 1271920 ?? Beside that... the round wire style holds strong in the tube when you pull it out, which made the flat blade style the winer!!! Like Dutchtouch1 sad before, "Good luck"!

The dipstick is made by many many people, Volvo, the aftermarket etc.
The Volvo OEM disptick lasts > 10 years.

You may have bought an aftermarket dipstick.

Bad news: genuine 1271920 dipstick from TASCA with VOLVO label on it - gone in less than 30K miles.
I'm not going over this again. Good luck with your choice!!

You never used it as a prybar, no?
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

If you think the new OEM is bad you should see the Scantech dipsticks. They probably won't last 5K miles.

I think the solution should be a "better" O-ring.
The Volvo O-ring tends to be a tiny bit tight. In the process of pulling the dipstick out with a tight O-ring the round plastic handle may crack.

Given that many of these cars are over 150K-200K miles, I wonder if we need the black O-ring at all.
If the O-ring is removed (store it for later):
- You won't have cracked dipstick because it is easy to pull out.
- Your PCV system will breathe better!

It won't be much of a PVC "system" if it leaks fumes into the air we breathe!!

The Scantech one I bought has almost no grip from the o ring seals so likely that one is leaking all the time.

My daughter upgraded to the new dipstick and has a hard time pulling it out to check the level. Very tight.
