1999 V70 XC Replacing auto trans shifter knob

Is replacing the automatic trans. shifter knob simply a matter of yanking the old one off and sliding the new one on? The shifter knob lock button stays depressed allowing the shifter to bumped out of gear. I would like to replace the whole knob/button assy. even though a button replacement kit is available. Any experience with this procedure? Thanx, Jeff

Pull up, really hard, and try not to break your nose or knock the rear view mirror off when it comes loose. I normally set the parking brake and put it in neutral since it gives me a better pulling angle.

The new one just pushes on and snaps in place. You will need to pull the boot back up and get it to snap in place as well but that is painless.

Yanking--yes. Simple--not so much.

Being old and having a bad back, I decided to pry it off using an open-end wrench with a wood fulcrum next to the console and a pry bar cheater in the closed end. I gradually increased the leverage until it came off alright....like a rocket, which cannonballed into the headliner. Amazingly, there was no damage that I could detect. Next time I'll have my wife hold the laundry basket over it

I used the button replacement kit from IPD - found it pretty easy to fit. Don't see why you'd want to replace the whole knob unless you happen to have a good one that you've acquired for free?

I replaced the button on mine recently but i think the only problem was that the little spring had shifted position. The spring should be placed so that it resists the button being pushed in. I tried to take a picture of the correct position but could not get a good one.
