Hello,
My headliner has been hanging for about a month now so last night I took the plunge to take care of it. I'm following the great write up on here. It has excellent step by step instructions. I've taken down the headliner, removed all the lights, sun visors, etc. My next step is to remove the plastic trim. Anyone have any suggestions how to remove the trim on the 2 pillars. Those are the next 2 pieces to go. For some reason whenever I remove plastic trim I always end up breaking a tab on one of the pieces since there is a bit of a learning curve. If anyone has removed these before please advise. I don't want to break them and them have them rattle once I put them back. Thanks!!!!!

I too had a headliner that was starting to sag over the passenger seat. I know the way I fixed it wasn't up to a professional standard, but it only cost about $5 and took me about 10 minutes to pin the fabric in place with upholstery twist pins. So far, it has been holding up pretty well and is not too bad of an eyesore.

I redid the interior in my 96 854 GLT last year. Pin in the headliner weren't an option as I was changing colors (and not really a via option to me anyway). (Tan to grey color change)
Pulled it out *carefully* through the trunk.
Dyed all of the light colored plastic/vinyl bits above the doors to match.
The sunroof trim is very brittle, and you'll most likely break it. I used THIS STUFF dyed the proper color, to replace it.

My sistyer her 85 passat has hundreds of tiny nails in the roof. Someone was creative too. I like the pin solution though! Looks good too.
I just replaced my headliner too.
It was snowing orange crap for months, but when it hung completely down like a curtain up until half of the car I went for it.
I only had the pieces wich have boltholes break where they hold the bolts. Those just crush the old plastic very easy. And when undoing them they fall apart.
Found all the pieces and glued them together with a very good 2component plastic glue.
Holes are like new. No extra noises or ugly places.
The rest of the pieces just came off like they should. Just pull them lightly and it will work.
Only problem I had was the sunvisor light cable.. Could not find a quick answer how to get it loose properly.
So I secretely cut the headliner. Noone can see the cut!
I was allready cleaning mine to put new fabric with foam etc. But could only find quite expensive stuff to buy. My wife said we had enough costs on the car allready. And she was right..
So we got a grey v70 one from the junkyard for 10 euro. And put that in.
Remember if you swap it, to check for the temperature sensor holes... Some cars dont have them.
Dont know if it is a ecc related or v70 thing. Didnt check if the v70 had ecc.
But I had to make the holes while it was installed in the car allready.. Since I did not check. And its rather nasty to find the proper place and not damage anything..

The connectors for the sunvisor lights are ALL the way down the A-pillars, close to the dash.
I guess you *should* pull that trim piece when you are removing the headliner, but I'd swapped a bunch of the grey stuff in already, and didn't want to risk any damage pulling it again for the headliner.
