2000 S70 turbo Transmission Slipping

Post by dsimmers »

Hi ,
Our 2000 S70 Turbo has what we think is some kind of transmission problem. 130K miles.
Mostly after the car is warm, and at highway speeds, the speedometer sometimes drops to zero, and the odometer display comes up with nothing but dashes-------. The Up arrow displays along with the winter traction/swervy tire light. Sometimes, the up arrow flashes. The car still runs OK at highway speeds , but once you stop, getting going again is hard. The tranny seems to slip-- you have to start out in first or second gear, and then manually shift up. At times, the odometer display comes back on ,and everything is instantly normal for awhile, then instantaneously, the problem comes back.
I haven't been able to get it in to chack the codes out yet.
Any ideas?

Thanks,

Doug

That isn't your transmission, that's your abs module packing it up.

Matty beat me to it.

Is the ABS light on? If the ABS light isn't on, does it come on when you turn the key to position II? Many times the light stays on so long that it burns out.

Hi,
The ABS light isn't coming on, except in the Acc. key position, so it is not burnt out.
Great discussions re. the cold solder joint problem, and fix. My wife is an expert solderer, so I'll give this a try.
In past instances, did people get transmission slippage like I'm getting?

I've never seen or heard of that complete set of symptoms without the abs light coming also.

Hi,
Well Matty was correct re. this problem. The ABS light WAS cominig on, but only when the event happened, ie. the speedometer dropped to zero and the tranny started slipping.
I spent way too much time looking for a S5 torq socket without buying a whole set, and I found out that a 4mm socket fit well enough to get the tiny bolts out of the ABS module. Once out, I didn't even try prying apart the cover, but just used my dremel cut-off wheel to cut the top off. My wife identified the cold solder joints, and re melted the joints. She used a 75 watt iron, so it which didn't take long. We used clear silicon caulk on both the cover and housing bottom, but didn't rebolt the unit back in until the caulk was set up, so the final tightening squeezed the set-up caulk together.
I still don't understand what these solenoid actuation joints have to do with the problem, since the soleniods didn't appear to be deploying as the problem occured.
Brilliant diagnosis, Manny. Someone should notify Vovlo of this manufacturing defect.

Thanks, again.

Doug

If you didn't do all of the pins, pull it back our and do that. The ones that weren't cracked will crack before you know it.

Matty, do I still have the award for "Best hack job opening an ABS unit"? Lol

Many car makers have the same problem. Jag's, VW's and the list goes on for the cars around the turn of the century.

Unfortunately you took 2nd place, the guy that broke his into individual pieces holds the title and will likely never lose it.

I have been getting a few in with holes drilled in them since you made that video,I thank you for that.
