2008 s40T All Warnings Flashed, Timing Slipped
I have a 2008 S40T with only 35,000 miles. Driving at 30mph all warning lights flashed and car stopped dead. Apparently it threw off 2.5 pages of error codes like in an accident. Had the CPU repaired/reprogrammed and apparently the timing had slipped and the car needs the top of the engine rebuilt. Any ideas of what kind of failure happened? $3500 total bill!!

That's definitely unfortunate. Are you sure the timing belt it's in cause? Just wondering in case the garage is trying to overcharge the bill. The warning lights could be caused by the main computer, but then it would be an electric issue. I think that when people had their timing belt breaking there were no warning lights, or at least not all of them. Same for the error codes.
If the belt indeed did snap, it is rather unusual with such low miles, and might be caused by some mechanical failure.

I think the mechanic is pretty fair and straight. Claims to have never seen such a thing. We're not sure what came first the warning lights then timing slip or timing slip then warning lights. The belt did not break, but the engine slipped time. He explained that a part apparently got into the timing chamber, so you are correct that another mechanical failure caused the timing to slip.
