2001 S60 Cabin Fan Irregularity

Post by revfred98 »

I now have a used 2001 S60. The cabin fan speed is irregular. That is, it runs fast, drops to slow, then faster, sometimes staying constant, but up and down is the rule. All this while in one position. Also, three or four times, I have returned to my parked car to find the fan running, while the car is off, of course. if I turn the key to position one, and set speed control to off, it will stop. Is this a relay? Thanks, and happy driving.

On teenage cars like yours and mine, irregular blower speed may be due to one of these:
1. A 'dirty' control potentiometer in the CCM (less likely), or
2. A worn blower motor bearing (replace blower). This may or not be accompanied by random bearing noises.

The blower 'running on its own with the car off' is not a concern; this is actually a climate control feature that prevents residual moisture from accumulating inside the HVAC evap unit.
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

Super! Thanks for the informative reply. I'll ask my Volvo guy to check out the blower motor. And that's a relief about the residual moisture thing. That could have been a weird one. Thanks again.

I had similar issue withe erratic climate control fan speed. Turned out it was the electronic resistor that went bad. This unit is on the blower assembly and is metallic with heatsink. Lowest cost was from amazon.com.
