Today at 70 MPH with the cruse set the cruse suddenly disengaged without warning. Then a few seconds later had the flashing up arrow and flashing S to W then soon after the Check engine light.
No doubt pulling a trans code of some kind but my scanner is showing no faults of any kind ( run into this once before) so i can not access the TCM codes to pull which one. Shooting in the dark here guys so any idea what would cause the cruse to suddenly shut down and then pull the trans code? My scanner won't pull the code but will reset the system so reset it twice come right back in minuets but is showing no shifting issues at this point so??
trying to find a shop with the software that will let me pull the TCM codes but so far no dice dealer wants $80 just to hook up and pull the codes + is 20 miles away. I have a listing of all the trouble codes and can likely handle the repair up to a full pull down /rebuild if I can just get access to what blasted codes it's pulling.

I understand PNP switch gives issues; I know nothing...see video.RCR wrote:Shooting in the dark here

Cruise and trans both need the vehicle speed signal that the instrument cluster takes in and processes from analog into a digital signal. Instrument cluster failure on 700/900 that affects this function is not what I'd call common but it does happen.
I'm ruling out the sensor being faulty since you do not mention any issues with speedometer or an ABS warning light.

First thing I thought was a speed sensor issue and yes there is no issues with speedo function or a warning light showing from the ABS system. Am about to get out and try to find a shop that will pull the codes as a normal OBD II hand scanner will flat not read TCM codes on these cars. This is the second time i have dealt with a trans code issue last time it was a minor wiring issue where a plug was corroded and had to be replaced. Easy fix once I got the codes but a PITA to get the info to run it down because few around here have the rather expensive Volvo software loaded that will let you read anything outside the basic OBDII engine management codes on these cars.

Got a new wrinkle on mine. Did a full reset ( pull battery and let sit for 5 then re connect + code clear with my OBD2 hand scanner) and the codes were gone for a while but the cruse remained dead. Everything else seemed normal in opp till the code came back and instantly when the code set the converter unlocked. Is converter lock up controlled by the speed input also from the cluster? Reason I ask is it seemed to be on the 45 MPH norm until the code reset then shut down on lock up.
Would be nice here to just pull the codes but so far none of my buddies with independent shops can access the trans codes off their scanners nor can I ( this forum needs the bang head at brick wall smiley to add here !!)

Ok my buddy found a scanner that would read the TCM. The Snap On would not pull the 98 TCM codes because it was below 2000 but they had an older unit that got it.
what we pulled brought more questions than answers.Trans code 1C kick-down switch and this is the one that has me going ??? 2F lockup function Slipping. Did a reset and clear of all codes. As of right now it's seemingly OK except that the cruse is still down.
The 2F code is concerning as do I have a converter clutch that's going and threw the code?
If so why did the reset not reactivate the cruse until the code pulled again?
Those were the only codes showing so???

Serious question here--- why are you looking at the PNP switch as a potential culprit? It's starting fine and pulled no code that would make me suspicious of the PNP so??93Regina wrote:Watch the Video above!RCR wrote:Ok

It's a common issue....Codes point, but they may or may not represent actual problem.RCR wrote:-- why are you looking at the PNP switch
I think your transmission might have a temp sensor, and a speed sensor...I'd sure pull the plugs and re-insert them. Temp sensor could be tested.
Oh, codes, I haven't used them in years/years! Most issues can be resolved without them, especially if Preventive Maintenance is practiced.
Same here on the codes and yes the car is regularly maintained. If fact it has 197K on the clock and is very very likely the cleanest V-90 on this forum. Magnaflow exhaust, hidden RA intake mods, bigger rear bar and a few more tricks that are hard to find but make it perform a lot better then stock.93Regina wrote: Oh, codes, I haven't used them in years/years! This issue appeared suddenly with only the cruse dropping without warning as a symptom before the codes appeared and the converter unlocked.
Then the hell to pull the TCM code began. After we did get the codes I am still trying to get a grip on what I'm dealing with here as finally pulling the codes just raised more questions and gave no answers.
i have a thick print out of all the Volvo diagnostic codes and trouble shooting info but this one has me scratching my head right now. Owner of this car 7 years and there is not much I have not been over at some point on the car but right now this one has me stumped as nothing I expected showed up in the codes.
Will hit it on Monday and start going over the harnesses on the left side of the trans and checking connections then work out from there. HATE shooting in the dark though as I can't pin down what I am dealing with here off the codes at all.
