2002 S60 ETM Issues (Lucky me)

getting to the point of unsoldering the eerpom from the old one and resoldering into the new unit..

Impossible.
The mainboard is using uncased chips on the ceramic substrate so you can only guess what chips is for.

If you have DiCE I can reprogram it remotely.
First I will read you original firmware form old one and put it to new one after that.

I ran into the same issue with my recently acquired Volvo S60. I bought a 8644347 etm on ebay and need the 8644345 software on this. How does this work exactly? would a volvo dealer do this service?

Dealer can program ETM only if it's part number fits your car on the volvo server.
As far as I know 8644347 fits 5-cyl turbo and 6-cyl (turbo and non turbo) for P2 platform.
For you car you need xxx344 or xxx345 ETM.
So dealer is unlikely to help.

If you have Dice, you can check ETM potentiometers. Worn out potentiometers are replaceable with Sacer contactless TPS.

I have a 2001 Volvo V70 non-turbo, and I have been through the ringer on this. The throttle body I had failed. I attempted to fix it and essentially destroyed it in the process. I was only able to get a junk yard throttle body from a 2001 S80 2.9 Liter which actually worked, but the car ran like s!@#$@#$. So I attempted to replace the TPS with a contactless one. Although this fixed the TPS, the wrong part number still prevented the car from running correctly.

I then attempted to buy a china new (rebuilt) part number 8644344. This was faulty in that the throttle valve sticks on full throttle, so the Dealer refused to update the software and install it. I am still in the process of returning it to the china parts dealer witch is a fairly expensive and time consuming process.

Finally a 2002 Volvo S60 showed up in the junk yard. I was able get over to the junk yard, acquire the throttle body (part number 8644345) and replace the one I had, as a bolt on item without dealer intervention. This works, and it straitened out the problem with it running like s!@#$@#$, and all the fault codes are finally gone. However, the cruse control still does not work, I will see if this problem goes away with time, and I will also try disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes or more, to see if that solves the cruse control problem. The other problem is the idle is still hunting a little bit. I am sure that given the age of the part, I will need to replace the TPS with the contactless version in order to completely solve the hunting idle.

So in summary, what I have learned is that for 2001-2002 non-turbo Volvo V70-S60 cars. Only part number 8644345 or 8644344 will work. It seems that Volvo dealer replaces these with later versions which are 36001821 and 36050564. If the ETM (Electronic Throttle Body) has not been built/rebuilt recently, it will most likely need the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) replaced with a contactless version to get rid of the hunting idle, as the original TPS wears out over time.

To complete. You can't just match ETM part numbers and install ETM on the 1999-2001/2 Volvos. Your chances that they will work are roughly 20%

Don't use eBay as a source for technical knowledge, most of those buyers are just pulling them off junk cars for $10 and then marking them up, and then saying " you might need to go the dealer for software"

You will need software.

And the dealer will rightfully refuse to install on an unknown part, or certainly $125 an hour with no outcome guarantee.

The 8644345 and 8644344 can be reprogrammed with software for any other part number Magnetti Marelli ETM but not at the dealer as they generally won't be involved with used modules let alone ones with the wrong part number for your model year.

With help from some very clever forum members here on MVS and a Dice tool connected to a laptop you can reprogram almost ANY module to suit your car.
