1998 V70 Exhaust smell in Cabin

Post by TheLoneAviator »

Anyone have any details on how to change the Turbo to Exhause gasket? I'm guessing that is the problem with the smell of exhaust in the cabin. The Turbo was replaced 2 yrs ago so I bet somebody messed up the gasket..? I can't even see the Turbo from the Top. I guess access is from under? (I've never messed with one of these.) Thanks in advance.

Sure it's not oil dripping down on top of the turbocharger? A bad oil cap seal, loose PCV hose, leaky cam seal, or clogged PCV system will force oil out on top of the turbo, which smells REALLY bad through the intake vents when you're stopped at a light or something.

You can get right under the car and look to see if the turbo's all covered in oil, like so:

Access from the top - there's a heat shield right over the turbocharger in the back of the engine bay. Remove it & a couple bolts for access to the turbo!

Believe it or not, there is no "gasket" between the turbocharger & exhaust manifold:

HOWEVER, there is an individual gasket from each of the exhaust ports on the head to the exhaust manifold. Simply undoing the bolts on the manifold will let you get that free enough to get in there and replace the gasket, without removing the turbocharger.

Purty-darn sure it's not oil. Definately a CO smell.
No smoke from the PCV, so that sys looks good.

I'd start my investigation at the flex pipe leaving the turbo. It's not uncommon for them to get a hole in them.

Turbo exhaust manifolds can also crack, so check from below and above to see if there is any telltale soot deposits.

Found the Hose from the Turbo out to Intake was not connected. Just laying infrom of the opening with a little gap. Car doesn't have a boost Gage or I might have seen a lower than normal boost.

That'll do it. Those old hoses blow off the clamps frequently and easily.

You'll probably get a couple MPG and change back too!

Yeah I was only getting about 14.5. I'll find out after I verify my Vac lines routing & put it all back together this w/e.
Thanks
