Hello,
These are cracked and falling off, bit-by-bit down into the bottom of the engine compartment. They seem to mostly serve as wire management assistance, so my first thought was to wire-tie the cables and trim off the remnants of the old jackets. But then it occurred to me to ask if these jackets (which are ribbed plastic tubes) are also serving a protective/insulating function? Any idea if this is the case? And, if anyone has a solution I would welcome the suggestions.
thanks!

Purchase new split convoluted conduit which is available online from certain auction outlets and replace the old cracked stuff with nice fresh new, it is available in different diameters - Mike

it does serve to insulate and protect the wires in the engine compartment. You can also buy it at most auto parts stores (think more expensive), or on the cheap side at harbor freight, quality wise it all seems about the same - when you expose plastic to a 300* engine compartment it does not last forever.

This is seriously easy stuff. I went to Home Depot, bought a few different sizes. Break off gently the rest of the cover and feed the wires through the split in the tubing, maybe a piece of tape for any trouble areas. use a vacuum cleaner in blow mode to blast out the old broken pieces. All new wire loom stuff looks nice and neat and holds up pretty well.

Home Depot--I didn't think to look for it there. It is rather pricy in the blister packs from the auto parts store. I made this part of my PCV and radiator replacement jobs.

Definitely a replace item on an 1999- on model with coil packs - the wiring loom on these self destructs after 10+ years

As dos bricks said, auto parts stores are going to be a bit higher on the price, and the stuff that looks "metalized" is down right crap - the foil coating attracts heat, and its still plastic underneath.
When we do custom work where wire is exposed we either split loom and wire tie every foot, or split loom and black tape it with a 4 inch swirl - either way we add a 1.5" black tape wrap where the wire exits the loom. It ends up looking like a very high class factory job.

I get real fancy, I use silicone tape on the ends. The stuff is expensive but once it seals it stays forever and never unravels. It is about $25.00 a roll at NAPA but one roll will more than do the whole underhood harness looms.

The ones under the cover on coil pack cars always seem to be crumbling,,,no doubt due to High temperature, oil vapour present under there.
