1998 xcv70 bevel gear oil type and filling procedure

Post by thaedge »

Hey, what type of oil is recommended for the bevel gear? And do you just fill it through the oil plug until it drains out? Mines empty right now. Thanks.

If it has been running empty then you have a bigger problem but that aside you do just fill it to the bottom of the filler hole. I just use a synthetic GL-5.

Thanks. Its empty because I drained it and removed it during an engine swap.

I wrote a detail DIY for my 2005 XC90, which is very very similar to your 1998 model...

I used the volvo stuff in my 98. Used a MityVac in reverse to pump in the fluid 'till is just barely started to come out. I don't have the driveshaft in place but I think it spins anyway. No trouble or noise.
