1998 xcv70 removing rear axle from bevel gear

Post by thaedge »

Hey all. I have my bevel gear detached from the trans, I have all the bolts taken out where it connects to the rear axle, but I can't seem to detach the rear axle from the BG, it looks like it has slid out a touch, but I've put some good force to it and it won't pop off. Any tricks?

Pop it with a mallet while pulling on it, it will come off.

When it comes off, does the cylindrical axle come out of the larger piece, or does the bigger piece split, one attached to the axle one attached to the bevel gear with a mating surface. Does that make sense?
