Aftermarket HU protect mode

Post by phils94850 »

I installed a double DIN cd/dvd/gps headunit and sometimes it will go into protect mode and no sound will come out of the speakers, I can disconnect and then immediately reconnect the speakers connector and ill get sound. I have determined its my right rear door/rear shelf speaker I think causing the issue. When I disconnect this wire the radio works fine. Do I have a bad speaker ? whats causing the protect mode when I can unook and rehook and no issues ?

If the circuit in HU has an overload detection then it will not go into PM until it senses the high load. You are resetting and then it works again until it senses overload. The load that trips PM may only occur in certain volume level and frequency ranges.

I would say that you do have a bad speaker but if it is an impedance issue disconnecting ANY speaker may cure it as it drops the load.

thanks jimmy.. I removed the HU and went through and disconnected each speaker while it was in protect mode until I got to the right rear and when I disconnected it, then my sound came back on. Ive left it disconnected since and no issues so im thinking its the speaker causing the problem. Ive installed these type of HU in 850s before without any issues until now so im guessing the speaker is causing the problem..?

98% the speaker
1% the wires or connectors shorting
1% the head unit
Normally those other 2% occur immediately on connection vs after listening for a moment

I finally figured the problem out,, I was wrong it wasn't the speaker, I grounded my amp/sub to the speaker stud and I guess it wasn't grounding good ? don't know, I moved the ground for the amp to a different location and now everything is working properly. Another lesson learned LOL

always ground to a lug nut (yeah, the ones on the wheels)...then make sure you have lots of wire

Good catch - That will without a doubt cause it
