1996 850 - Hesitation/loses pressure when taking off

Post by boxycar »

Hello all, my car has been having an issue for a couple months and I would really appreciate some help getting to the bottom of this. It's a very specific issue and it only happens under specific circumstances so I will try and narrow it down for you guys.

When taking off from a stop/red light sometimes (not all the time) my car just loses pressure. It's like the RPMs drop at 2000 and wont go anymore past that (they will go lower) if I keep pumping the gas or wait a couple seconds it catches again and off I go. It doesn't happen if I take off at a low speed only when i'm at a light and Im trying to keep up with traffic

It ESPECIALLY happens if I take a turn from being stopped (especially Left turns) and it's the WORST when making a left-hand U-turn. I don't understand how turning can make it worse but it's consistent.

this NEVER happens mid drive only when taking off from a stop. sometimes and very rarely mid-drive I feel the engine giving a shake like it's going to stall (but VERY light shaking nothing vigorous) and it disappears after a few seconds.

This issue appears in waves, some days it is fine all day then when it happens it happens almost every time all day long Or sometimes just for like 5-6 stops in a row.

I do not know much but it feels like a fuel injection issue like the car isn't getting anymore gas, or it feels like the car just loses engine pressure and hitting the gas wont do anything for a couple pumps.

As far as CEL they do come on but they stay erased. First time was for the MAF sensor and second time was for the 02 sensor (p0130). Both never came back after being erased.

Another thing I might mention is my exhaust is sort of smelly, I don't know if that fits in anywhere but I want to be as informative as possible. I also ran fuel injection cleaner through my system and changed the fuel filter these didn't make any difference.

I would appreciate any help, I've scoured these forums and the far reaches of the internet and nothing I found was close enough to my issue.

Thank you very much

This sounds like a bad MAF issue to me.

If this is a non-turbo, check the accordion air hose to the throttle body for cracks underneath - sometimes they'll bust a hole right in the middle of them. If it's a turbo, check ALL air hoses for a good, snug connection at the clamps.

If none of that works, unplug the MAF entirely and take the car for a drive. If it drives more predictably, time for a new mass airflow sensor.

Hello again jblackburn, thanks for the response.
I'm assuming for the MAF that I just unplug that electrical connection. the clip connection pictured. Is that right?
