98 v70 GLT ECU "not ready". Can't pass inspection

Post by TRuck »

Hi
Was hoping to not be posting so soon after my recent brake job...but....oh, well.

Went to get my car inspected & the ECU is "not ready" or N/A are the codes. So I failed inspection ($37)

At least 500 or more miles ago I erased the codes. It seems that it is has not reset?

Is there anything i can do?

i have already gotten one ticket ($65) parked on the street & then pulled over ...on the highway AT 50 MPH !!?? no less...showed trooper my "i tried" paper and he let me go.

thanks in advance

Some states have a special "exemption" for the '98 x70 cars. The car I just fixed passed emissions in less than 100 miles of having the battery installed. Sometimes the car will say "not ready" if it is "not running", sometimes it won't. Try to get them to check it both ways, running and not running.

Truck. In NY, your 1998 can have up to two OBD circuits " not ready" and as long as yourCEL is not on, you can pass inspection. This information is on the NYS DMV website.

My 1999 passed NYS emissionsthisway in May 2014

There is a prescribed drive cycle to set the monitors. See the second post.

Thanks guys.
Lee I will try the prescribed method.
Car is hot at moment.
I have 5 "not ready" : Both o2, evap, cat, alt air.
and I guess I labeled subject wrong. it is actually my OBDII, not my ECU. Correct?
thanks

The OBD is the plug you connect the scanner. All the codes come from the ECU.

We usually say the OBD circuits are "not ready" even though it's the ECU that sends them.

Try driving for about 50 miles, I bet all the cycles will go ready except for the evap cycle.

He said he drove it 500 miles
Usually two will get to ready in a couple of miles then the third in another 10-15 miles.
As was said, you're allowed two not readies with a 98-2000 Volvo, this is a Federal statute.

What's "alt air'?

So tried to do round one trip....it is virtually impossible to maintain the speed/rpms in NYC/Brooklyn...lights,traffic,potholes,crazy drivers,man-hole covers bubbling up on the top of asphalt mounds the size of Australian ant hills....

so i tried to just at least maintain the rpms by putting in nuetral, and coasting when I couldn't maintain speed or when interrupted by the afore mentioned interruptions. probably this won't suffice. but I will try round two tomorrow since it's all i can do at the moment.
thx

Don't do that, just drive it more or less slowly and normally.
No neutral, no coasting
The perfect drive cycle is not necessary
OH! Do NOT turn the AC on, it will never set with the AC on
