1996, 850 Turbo, 16" Steel Wheels

Post by Rbaratt »

I am looking for a new set of steel rims for my 16" snow tires. I bought my last set of OEM 15" steel wheels from Volvo for my '95 850 but now I have learned that there isn't an OEM 16" steel wheel available for the 850 series vehicles, but there are 16" steel wheels available for the S70's...can anyone confirm if these have the same bolt pattern and offset as the earlier 850 models? I believe the specs for both vehicles are the same (16x6.5, 108 mm bolt pattern, with a 43mm offset). I could not get the parts department at two Volvo dealers to confirm this for me.

I really want to use OEM because I had issues with an aftermarket set in the past.

Hmmm, I looked for 16's a couple of years ago for my V70 and couldn't find them anywhere. I now run the winters on a set of 15 steelies and they've been fine. 15 should fit if you don't have the big 302 brakes installed. There's lots of 16 inch alloys available on craigslist, cheap set might be an option.

I've been lurking here for around 4 years now and I've never heard of a 16" steel wheel for S70s. The wheels on any Volvo P2 series have around 43mm offset (unless they're from a 2004-2007 R series) with 65.1mm bore and 108mm PCD.

I'm running 2001 or 2002 XC70 16" alloy wheels (with 205/50s) on my 2000 V70 and they look, fit and drive just fine. These cars also share the same basic suspension setup as an 850 so pretty much anything goes on 850s unless it's an early 4 stud.

Thanks for the info. I haven't call on these but Volvo Parts Webstore had this listed for a 2000 s70. They are listed at approx $90 each. Based on your comments I should be confident that 16" S70 wheels will be a fit for my 850.

Rockauto lists this part number for a 1998 and up S70, although it's not cheap - $95 each reconditioned.

I purchased four Volvo 16" steel wheels and had my snows mounted, balanced and installed on the car. I did not purchase wheel caps. Besides appearance, is there any reason why I should install wheel caps? I don't care how it looks and want to save the cost of the caps unless they offer some protection that I am not aware of.

Do the 16" steelies from the 960/940 fit the 850/s70?

The wheel covers (hubcaps) are purely for esthetics. If you don't want 'em, you don't need 'em.

They made them, I had them on my 850R (steelies w/ hubcaps and snows).
Same wheel for an S70-V70

Part number 9173248, a 16x6.5" steel wheel with +43 offset. I have had 2 sets of these 16" steel wheels during my Volvo ownership and can personally vouch that they clear the 302mm rotors.

There's also a 16x7" Volvo steel wheel with +49 offset that also supposedly clears the 302mm rotors(but this was 2nd hand info), I usually see them paired with S80 tire sizes.
