1996 - 855 GLT - Sputtering While In Drive

Post by RogueWave »

Recently my 1996 855 GLT has started acting up a bit. It has been a great car until now. Anyway, I will cut to the chase...

My car sputters while it is in drive or reverse. However, this sputter isn't noticeable while the car is in motion. When the brake is applied and the car is stopped, I can feel multiple misfires. I went ahead and replaced the plugs, distributor cap, rotor button, and ignition cable. I am not entirely sure what could be causing this problem. The misfires disappear the second that the car is shifted into park. It is also worth noting that I replaced the mass airflow sensor about a year ago. I have sifted through the site, but I can't find anything that matches this behavior.

Could this be that my camshaft position sensor is failing?

I have a code scanner and have pulled the codes. It is only pulling a P0440 and P0172.

I would appreciate any help I could get with this!

Thank you.

what replacement parts did you use ? These cars are picky and want only OEM parts.

Seems like a MAF issue to me.

rspi,

I remember when my old MAF was completely shot, the misfires were a lot more substantial. You could see a decrease in revs on the tachometer. The misfires I am experiencing now seem weaker.

phils94850,

The MAF is OEM but I didn't use OEM parts for the distributor cap, rotor, or ignition wire. However, the problem existed before I replaced these things, and persisted after.
