2001 v70 xc Awd carrier bearing - shaft

Post by wiggy668 »

I had a funny noise on my Volvo eve at low speed . At first I thought that was a wheel bearing problem.
Then it became louder like something was broken , so I had to park the car. I thought that was the shaft,I removed the whole shaft to make it FWD.Now I realized it"s the front carrier bearing. I wanna know If I remove ,is it a big problem for the v70 Xc

I can't be of much use here. I have heard/read that some collar can be replaced on these. It would probably be easier do get a used one from like Erie or another used part source. The thing itself is well over $1000 from Volvo. My 98 AWD has been running for years as an FWD but the bevel gear was always OK and I still have it in place in case I decide to get a propshaft.
Search around here, I know one of the guys here did a nice write up on rebuilding the thing.

I'm not sure on a 2001, and I am going to move this post to that forum, but on the '97 -'00 versions the carrier bearing is behind the bevel gear and it bolts up to the floorboard. Unfortunately it can't be just swapped out without cutting the drive shaft and most of us just send it off to a shop like Colorado Driveshaft to get it rebuilt and re-balanced.

I really don"t know if I should drive it , because I don"t want to mess up the transmission or drop me off on the street. It is so loud.
I think mine is behind the bevel gear too with a big bolt.
