What about an angled box wrench on the plug, and then have your three cats teach that puppy who's bossabscate wrote:...Can't get socket on this puppy...
BTW, what did your old oil look like (besides sediment, did you see any brass particles from the synchros)
When I was draining my 5 sp manual (the 1987 340DL) I was surprised to see how clean everything was

I actually promise I will strain it through a coffee filter to see how much metal it has, after 4 drivers and two teenage learners on the transmission. I could not see any.
An angled 24 mm box fit the drain perfectly. An open crescent wrench on that big plug would be fine too.

Since the car is a teenager (1999), have you had the fun to do the clutch yet?
I had to replace the disc on mine (it started slipping only because of a leaking RMS at under 75k and 10 years in service). I recall the plate and release bearing still looked like new ...

Original clutch with 5 drivers and three learners. Still great clutch action, although, of course, they die dramatic deaths. I actually launched and retrieved a 3000 pound boat with this car once.

Jimmy made a great suggestion about changing lube in the transmission. Remove the fill plug first! If for some reason it is stuck you haven't drained the transmission and then have no way to fill it back up.
I'm guessing that one came from experience.

Well, you can pop the driveshaft and fill it through the driveshaft hole...see picture

Or, you could rig up a sealed connector to the DRAIN and fill it that way - either gravitationally or using a $9 Fluid X-fer Hand Pump from HFT

That is, more or less, the official procedure to add the drain to the bevel gear except that you drill through a bolt hole.
