My exhaust is gradually getting louder, with a deep vibration while stopped in drive with foot on the brake. There are no obvious air leaks in the entire exhaust system. I have replaced all motor mounts and transmission mounts that are the common Volvo failure items. Anyone had success replacing the muffler to quiet this type of noise?

A common place for the exhaust to break is at the very back of the catalytic converter. If this is a low pressure turbo model another place that seems to break is at the flange between the turbo and the down pipe to the catalytic converter - at least with the AWD versions.

Your best bet is to get the car to an independent, mom and pop, muffler shop. The Midas type places will only replace systems but most of the small shops can weld broken places and it typically costs in the $50 to $75 range and will buy you a couple of years at least.

1+,

The classic place is the junction between the cat + pipe feeding the muffler.
Local muffler shop welded a new pipe for me for $80...
So far so good.
