96 850 turbo How to remove flex tube on turbo

Post by JimBee »

I can't see the clamp that holds the 3 inch tube that connects the air intake flex tube to the turbo. Can someone clue me in on getting that off?

Thanks!

It's there. It is hard to see. Try to reach down and feel around or peak from under the car. Take out the air cleaner related stuff and you might have more access. Strong flashlight will help.

I think I'm going to need x-ray vision for this one. The air box is out and I have access under the car with a pretty strong flashlight. Still haven't been able to see it. Maybe this will be my lucky day.

If you lay across the motor and look down over the waste gate you can see the 7mm clamp nut. 9 Times out of 10 the nut is pointing up.

+ 1 The only way I can ever reach it is to lay across the motor with a flash light and a long screw driver.

I agree with the guys on this too. I leave the car on the ground and lay over the engine. I then use one of those bendy mirrors and a flashlight to find out where the clamp is. I use a long extension 1/4" shaft with a bendy coupling and a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive wrench. Once you've done this couple of times you will get it easier. Most importantly I try to make sure I get the little tab on the 3" tube aligned correctly with the turbo casing when re-installing. Again a I use the bendy mirror to help with this.

Hey, thanks guys! I'm inspired to climb in there with the tools mentioned. It just so happens somebody down the alley is tossing a foam mattress, might just take a chunk of it to make the task a little more comfortable.
Plus I pulled the head today, so that might make it easier to see what I'm doing.
Now for the next question: I'll post it separately, but I'm thinking about rebuilding the turbo while I've got everything apart.
