Heater fan blower failed w flashing ac/recylc lghts

The heater fan blower on my 1993 850 4Dr GLT failed to work properly often with AC/Recycle Air lights flashing for a few seconds. Occasionally the fan would come on for a while but more often it fails to work. I don't think it is the fuse and the fan is newly installed OEM. I would be very grateful for any help in locating the module or a relay that controls the fan that has gone bad, and how i can get access to it for replacement. Thanks in advance.

Dump the codes out of socket B-1 and post them. Then we can help for sure. It sounds like the power stage but the fact that it works sometimes has me scratching my ever balding head.

The heater blower fan on our 1993 volvo 850 GLT sedan has stopped working with flashing ac/recyl air lights when car is turned on. The fan is brand new OEM from dealer recently installed. The fan would come on every now and then for a few secs then goes off, but once it stayed operational for a few days without fail. We have been having a mild winter this yr in PA so i did not feel the urgency to deal with it. However, last few days with plummeted temperature the problem can not be ignored any longer. The fuse is still in working cond. and the fan does work. From the postings I read here the problem may be due to a faulty resistor pack. I would be grateful if any of you could provide me with direction on how to get at the resistor pack (if you agree with me) that controls the heater fan blower for replacement.

I'll answer back in your original post.

The power stage is often referred to as the blower resistor since it goes in the same place. The blower resister is used on the manual climate control units and the power stage is used on the automatics.

As I mentioned before you really need to check the codes at port B-1 to find out for sure. Detailed instructions on how to retrieve codes is here.

Have a sheet of paper and a pen ready so that you can count the blinks. The led will flash in sequence to give you the codes.

A code 314 for example would be:

blink..blink..blink........blink......blink..blink..blink..blink

The ECC power stage (resistor) is expensive at US $109.00 each so it would be my suggestion to do some testing before you change it.

If you do decide to just change it it is located, inset into the air duct, between the blower motor and a pair of relays. It is held in place with a single torx head screw. You really need to remove the glove box and the bottom knee panel to get to it. There is also a bundle of wires directly in front of the screw and I've found that using a torx that is one size to small allows you to remove the screw with the driver at an angle to clear the wire harness.

Thanks for your reply Oz! Unfirtunately, I didnt get a chance this weekend to read up on how to obtain the codes yourself from the website you linked. I will have a go at getting the codes and will post them on this site before buying the resisor pack.

We have successfully fixed the heater blwoer problem, we now have heat in our car again thank you very much for your help Oz. All needed was a new blower resister from Groton, and using the useful insatllation information you have provided I repalced the defective part.
