2004 S60 Oil Leaking

I recently purchased a 2004 Volvo S60 non turbo with 140,000 miles i am afraid it needs a new pcv breather box. I first noticed my oil was a quart low after just changing the oil a month ago. I also noticed the smell of oil burning and smoke coming from the dipstick and filler cap. Yesterday while driving a while i heard i high pitched squeal, i removed the oil filler cap to see if the sound would go away but i continued to make that noise. i was under the impression that when you remove the oil filler cap when you had a pcv valve it would stop. Could it all be a coincidence and possibly be an easy fix such as a new oil filler cap gasket or are all these signs indicative of a pcv overhaul. If i did get a new filler cap would this exacerbate the problem? How long can i go without fixing this and not destroying my engine? Can i tackle this issue myself, i am a newbie that has only really every changed plugs and coil packs? Has anyone fixed this themselves? in desperate need of help, i love the car and want to be able to drive it for a long time.

You need PCV job done urgently if you see smoke blowing out of dipstick tube. Otherwise high pressure may push camshaft seals out, engine will start loosing oil quickly.

This is not the most pleasant work in the world, but still doable.

Okay, thank you very much hopefully i will have some money to get the pcv kit soon. maybe i was exaggerating about smoke but its more smoke steaming out from both the filler cap and stick. is there anything i can do to relieve the pressure until i can do this. it will probably be a couple of weeks.

As far as the cam seal, is this a job i can perform myself or would i have to remove the the engine? Very worried my car.

Don't push it hard until PCV is done.

No need to remove engine for seals work, but you need a Volvo camshaft locking tool, plus you may want to raise engine a bit (either with hydraulic jack or engine support bar).

Don't rev the engine, lift up a bit the dipstick for the lower engine end pressure. For the upper engine end pressure you can't loosen the oil fill cap because it will spray oil everywhere.

But the high pitched noise means the job is urgent. Air is already passing past engine seals which will ruin them, thus the noise. Will possibly have to remove the oil pan as well.

thank you for the info! i will try and take it easy on my poor engine and not rev it. it only made that sound on one trip, i have since driven the car a few times and the high pitched whistling has gone away. i am gonna try and do this myself. i am gonna buy the kit now. it looks so scary for someone hasnt worked on cars much. theses are the exact tool i have purchased thus far to due this job...please look over and add to this. i would much appreciate your help. Finally, a few gaskets need to be removed for this job, it's good to have a new gasket and a gasket sealant handy so as to make sure no vacuum leaks will form. The oil pan uses a special Volvo sealant ($$)

i also took the advice and lifted the dipstick out a bit and i think it is working because now i see little bubbles in the oil.

can anyone think of anything else i will need and also can some provide a link to the written directions to this procedure. Thank you so much!!

I'd check out a Craftsman ratcheting wrench set at Sears before buying that wrench, you may end up spending $20 for a metric set of six rather than one.

I did the nitrite glove test on the s60 this morning and it did not inflate. It was not sucking all that much, the glove was just laying there flaccid. I drove the car about 7 miles very gently. I did not want rev the engine in fear of exacerbating the problem.

I think im gonna go ahead and attempt to do this pcv breather kit. What do you think? I am in urgent need of help. Thank you.

Thank you for the advice on the craftsman, I am gonna go by sears and see what they got in terms of rachet wrenches.
