Hi there,
My wife and I have a 1994 850 with about 124K on it and recently the cabin fan (heating/cooling)sarted acting up. About two months ago we noticed that in the 1, 2 and sometimes 3 setting, the fan would squeek. If we moved it to the forth position for a few minutes the sqeeking would stop. Yesterday, I started the car and the fan woud only work in the forth (high) position, and it has started making a nerve rattling squeeking sound. My concvern is that this is eventually going to completely fail leaving us with out any mean of air circulation for heat, cooling, defrost etc. Does anyone know what this problem might be, and how easy is it to fix it myself? Thank you for your time.
Regards, Jared Purdy, Toronto, ON.

This is a problem with many 850s. The fan bearings dry out, start to squeak and, eventually cause the fan resistor to fail. The fan resistor controls speeds 1,2 & 3. Speed 4 is controlled by a relay.
Run a search on this site for 'heater fan' using the 850 forum and you will come up with a lot of advice.

Basically you need a new fan motor and relay board.
My 850R (with LOW mileage) is starting to make a loud humming noise in very cold weather.
It's just a matter of time before it gets worse and will be replaced

Well, to my great embarassment and now pain (from being cold in -16 weather), I should have listended to the telltale signs of my heater fan going bad and replaced it sooner. Now I have no heat... AND I still haven't taken care of that bad front left rusted caliper that makes my car pull to the left. The price one pays for being way too busy and taking a business trip to Arizona where it is much warmer.
Time to get out the propane bullet heater and sit out in the cold and fix this. I wanted to say thank you ahead of time to everyone who posted on the failed heater fan topics. There are tons of great posts on how easy it is to fix this. I hope to follow in your footsteps.
I am a bit amazed at how many people post with this problem. I am also heartened to see that Volvo appears to have fixed this problem for the newer models, but perhaps I'm not looking in the correct forums.
Cheers,
Paul
