Good morning all, I tried searching for similar topics but couldn't find anything so I hope you someone else has run into this.
My 05 s80 is having issues with the dial knob on the fan control intermittently not working. Sometimes it works fine, others it just spins and spins without changing the blower speed. If I switch over to Auto and set the temperatures it adjusts the fan speeds appropriately.
So it seems clear to me that the issue is somewhere, perhaps in the contacts, in the fan speed knob/dial. Anyone run into this? Is there a removal/cleaning/re-soldering solution? Or do I need to replace the whole climate control panel?
Thanks,
Isaac

My 99 S80 did a similar thing. The knob would only intermittently work and Auto would work most of the time. It progressed to where the knob did nothing and the Auto speeds were erratic as well and sometimes the fan wouldn't work at all. I ended up changing the blower motor and the resistor and now the knob and Auto work awesome and the fan is quieter than ever. I got both parts online for less than $100 and it only took about one hour to replace. I replaced the cabin air filter while I had everything apart. There is a good write up with pictures on here that I used as a guide to do the swap.
I don't know if yours is the same issue, ('99 vs. '05) but mine started out the same way and got worse. I gambled $100 and I won
Surely someone on here that is more experienced will chime in with some ideas soon...

Interesting. Thanks for the idea of the resistor. I've changed blower resistors on other cars before. I could see this happening perhaps if the fan control uses a separate resistor from the automatic climate controls. But speeds still vary when the knob works. Which leads me back to a control knob or connection issue.

Yeah maybe it is something else but mine did the same thing. When the knob was working, speeds would vary, although not the full range of speeds. Before the knob totally stopped working only the top two speeds would work.
