1996 850 GLT 16 inch wheels not quite right

Post by capthaak »

I bought a set of genuine 16 volvo wheels to replace my not so great looking 15's. Bolts all line up, but it seems the hub on the car is too big for the bigger wheels. When i tried to tighten the lugs, they wouldn't hit the torque and had about a 1/4 inch gap between the rotor and wheel back.
I've swapped many a set of wheels before, and have never had this issue. I'm attaching pix.

I don't recognize the pattern name just by looking at it but the later model center hole is smaller on many of the wheels. What year/model did the replacement wheels come off of?

One possibility is the offset on the new wheels is not correct for your 850. IPD has a nice guide for "what wheels fit my volvo" here -> http://www.ipdusa.com/techtips/10010/wh ... lvo-models . If you answer Lee's question, you'll likely have your answer as well.

Don't recognise the wheel style. The 52.5mm offset might be too much. Check the rear of the tire and the rim are not fouling on anything. If I recall the offset on the 850 didn't leave a lot of room at the rear of the tire/rim and the suspension.

Can you post the rest of the part number on that 16" wheel? Looks like it starts with 306

Good point j-dawg! Forgot about that too! Some of the later cars don't use the locator stud and only use a small regular bolt as the rims don't have the deep locating hollow on the rear for the pin.

Those are from a 2005-2007 Volvo S40 and they have a hub bore diameter of 63.4mm. The 850 has a hub bore diameter of 65.1mm. You'll need to take the wheels to a machine shop in order to use them.

Part number on that wheel should be 30647088, called the Cygnus.
