1999 v70xc Lost valve; need new head

Post by flyingd »

It looks like I lost a valve; no compression in #2 cylinder. I had someone with a scope look inside and he said the walls and piston look ok.

so my questions are;

Where do I go to get a rebuilt head

How hard is it to pull the whole engine if I decide to buy a used engine.

By the way, mine is a turbo.

Thanks

I suggest doing the head and not the motor. Your car likely has VVT which complicates things a little but you should be able to do a lot of it yourself.

Your car may also have solid lifters instead of hydraulic. If that is the case, they should be kept in order, with their valves.

In the mean time, if you keep driving it, unplug that injector.

That engine is a bit tough to find. It took me over a year to find a decent used engine for my old '99 XC. I bought that car thinking it had a bad head gasket but the cylinder walls were trashed. I could find one on occasion but everyone seemed to want $800 to $900 for it and they would ship to Kansas City from one coast or the other which wasn't cheap in terms of freight.

If you have something else to drive it is fairly easy to have your existing head re-worked at a machine shop and they can typically turn one around in a few days.

I have a spare '99 head in the garage but it overheated badly and I have have never paid to have it tested. Push comes to shove I can sell it to you for cheap but it is heavy and it may or may not be any good. I fear it might be good money chasing after bad by the time freight gets figured in. If you need a core or something it might make sense since I can ship it to Florida just as cheap as you can.

thanks for the offer of the head; I appreciate it, I will have to wait until I know more. I have a friend that has access to a video probe, so Monday we will look into the cylinder and see if there is any damage there. Then I can decide what to do.
