1995 Volvo 850 GLT shifitng problems?

Post by Viraaj »

1995 Volvo 850 GLT, with 75k and is an automatic. When ever it shifts into first and second at a high RPM the car just jumps into each gear. Its more rought in first then is in second. Any way of fixing this? ot is the tranny just shot?

Do a transmission flush ASAP. This should smoothen your shifts.

Viraaj,
I was in a hurry earlier and really didn't give you a thorough answer. First, pull your transmission dipstick (it's on the right hand side, just in front of the radiator and below the air intake hose from the front of the car if you're standing in front of the car with the hood up...it has a yellow handle) and check the condition of your transmission fluid. If it's black and smells burnt, tread carefully...don't do a full flush, but a drain from the drain plug (and measure how much comes out...usually between 3-3.5 quarts) and fill the same amount through the dipstick tube (your car uses Dexron III). If the color isn't black and the fluid doesn't smell burnt, then do a full flush. You don't want to dislodge stuff in your transmission and have it plug up your system...that's why I said to be careful here. If you do a drain and fill, then drive your car for about a week and do it again. Repeat this until the fluid is a nice pink to red and you don't smell that it's burnt anymore. You'll need to check your ATF level with the car hot, and running. Put your car in park after at least a 20 minute drive and with foot on brake pedal, go through your gears, letting the shifter sit in every gear for 10 seconds, then back to park, and let it idle for 3 minutes (this is the proper way to check the level), then with engine still running, pull your dipstick and check the level. Don't wipe it with anything that will leave lint on the stick. These transmissions are very finicky and you don't want to introduce any foreign substance into them.
The transmission flush write-up is here: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/chat/p ... php?t=8767
I have done this flush or "drain-and-fill" several times on different Volvo's and it works every time.

Good luck and let us know how things are going.

If you're going to do it that way with a little at a time, buy 4 quarts...like I said 3-3.5 is going to come out. You'll also want a bit to top it off if it's low to begin with (which I've found is often the case).
