1997 850 speedometer and odometer work intermittently

Just got the car for my son. Odomter didn't work, so I replaced the broken gear. Now the speedometer and odometer work intermittently for a short time, then stop. I have heard this might be an ABS module problem, but any other suggestions?

If the ABS and/or TRACS warning lights are illuminated it is a certainty that you have a bad module. I have had the odometer portion get flaky after replacing the gears if the odometer stepper motor board isn't reseated fully - pressed on harder than you think it should require - back on to the main board but that only impacts the odometer and not the speedometer.

This happened to my 96 850. When I jiggled the key switch (turned it back just a bit) the speedometer and odometer started to work again.

The ABS and Trac lights are not on. The ignition switch is new.

Do the ABS and TRACS lights come on when the key is in position II and the car has not been started? The lamps can burn out. If they do come on with the key in position II then I would focus on the connector at the instrument cluster The speed signal should be on the Yellow/Black wire that goes to pin A-7 on the cluster.

How about red brake light come on and odometer go to "-----" ?
My ABS light never came on (did light up at pos.II) instead "brake" light came on and arrow would flash.
Changed my ABS module and hasn't happened since.

I think my ABS light is burned out. It doesn't come on when the key is turned on before starting the car. Anyway, I got an ABS module from the junk yard, put it in, and now everything is working fine, at least for the past couple of days. We'll see if that continues. Thanks a lot for everyones' input.
