"adjust" the timing belt on the loaner car before you bring it back in

Is it possible to a compression check without a timing belt installed?

The valves need to be closed to test the cylinder compression. If the belt is removed there will be no synchronization between pistons and valves and some of the valves will remain open.

which means that as soon as someone spins it over to test it, many of the valves will be bent, necessitating a rebuild.

That being said, the last time I seen the car the timing belt was off and in the front seat. Would they put it back on to do the compression test?

Unless it's their first day on the job, absolutely yes.

I haven't heard anything from the dealership. It's been a month now. Still driving their loaner Xc60. It had 27 mile on it when I got it now it has 1692 mile. Figure I'll just drive it until they call me..... it's so frustrating not knowing

In rare cases dealerships forget they loan cars out. Keep a low profile, cancel the insurance on your own car and take out your own insurance on the loaner. You may never hear from them again......
