1999 V70XC AWD Exhaust cam timing

Post by witenite »

I bought a 1999 Volvo V70XC AWD in 2012 with 120,000 miles on it. The timming belt had been replaced but there was no sticker saying when. At 154,000 miles the idler pully berring broke and the engine trashed the valves. I had the head rebuilt and my son installed it for me. I bought a cam lock kit to set the cams but I found out later he did not use it. He set the cams using the #1 cylinder TDC and valve positions.
The engine runs but I get an exhaust cam out of position message and poor high end preformance.
Can I retime the cams without pulling the cam cover? I know I can get to the back of the intake cam but what about the exhaust? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I was holding off on answering this one because I am assuming the engine has VVT (variable valve timing). The short answer is yes, but you will need to pull the timing belt off and reset the VVT timing. I dont kow how to deal with VVT so you will have to wait for others to chime in ... if it is non-VVT then it is a piece of cake, see any timing belt writeup.

In any case, you can definitely get to the back of both cams easily, just pull of the cover and the CPS, respectively.

If your son used TDC to set the timing, then that probably explains why the engine is out of time. You need to use the crank mark and not TDC per se.

Thank you erikv11 & cn90 for the information. I am glad I don't have to pull the cam cover again.
