1998 Volvo S70 T5M bad axle

Post by huzzsaba »

Just picked up a 98 S70 T5M for cheap. Needs some work. Has a CEL which I will check and report back.

The passenger Axle is supposedly bad and needs to replaced. When I took it for a test drive, Everything was fine until I pressed the brakes when I felt pulsation which felt like bad rotors. The Seller told me that he took the car to the shop for the same issue and was told that it was not the brakes, rather the sound and pulsation came from the axle. The Axle had a torn boot. There was no sounds when turning or when accelerating.

It sounds kind of weird I know. I have yet to pick up the car, and when I do, I will open it up and check everything.

The Question is if the axle is bad, Can I put a axle from a automatic car? For now I will want to keep costs down and there are a lot of axles online but they are from automatic cars. Will it work, or do I need it to be from a Manual car?

Thanks!

Rare find - should be a fun car with some work put into it.

The axles are different between manual and automatic transmissions. You can probably find an N/A axle that will fit.

I suppose a binding CV joint under forwards pressure might cause that "warped" rotor sensation, but I've never had it happen. Might want to price out some brakes too.

So axles from any manual s70/v70 should work regardless of turbo or not?

BTW, the guy that sold me the S70 also had a Chevy Cruze :)

Yeah, 94-98 850 or non AWD -70 models. The M56 is the same between turbo and non turbo models.

I believe 1999s used a different axle, at least the autos changed it that year.

Small world - the MPG is great, but do miss the extra 100 horsepower.

manual axles are also changed for 99. they use a bolt to retain the axle at the hub, rather than a nut as on previous models.

So here is what I found so far after opening it up.

1)Passenger side axle boot is ripped.
2)Passenger side ball joint is bad
3)Brake caliper is missing the spring clip on passenger side

So I will replace the boot, change the brakes, put a new clip in there, replace the control arm, and then hope that the pulsation is gone. I too feel its not the axle since its totally fine while driving.

If you do have to replace the axle, don't use an Empire. They are crap. Cheap, but crap. I had one last only 13K miles. The aggravation isn't worth the cost saving.

UPDATE: The vibration ended up being bad rear brake rotors. Replaced them and everything is running smooth!

Thanks
