1998 S70 Key spins in the the ignition
I have a problem with the key spinning in the ignition and when it happens the gear release doesn't work. I pulled the ignition switch and the key system works as normal. I can get the car to start by turning the key to position II and turning the ignition switch with a screw driver. buy when i put the ignition switch back on, the key just spins but not when the switch is not mounted.

How worn is your key? I had this in a 2000 V70, but it uses a different key system, but in my case it was caused by a badly cut new key from Volvo. Otherwise it is a worn out ignition key. More experienced guys may be able to add if the 98`s have an electrical portion of the transmission/park sensor for the transmission that may think the vehicle is not in park. Try cycling the transmission stick a few times through the slot, and see if that helps. If it does, it may be the pnp(?) switch is faulty.

your interlock cable may be installed improperly. (I know, mine is!) You say you have removed the electrical part of the switch, does it look like it had been out before, or is this a new situation? I'm sure rspi has a video for the switch change, but I don't know if he references the cable

Tried both keys but the strange thing is that when the ignition switch is separated from the key cylinder the key mechanism works like it suppose to. and stops at position III but when i mounted the switch back on the key started spinning with no stops.

And the slot was aligned between the mechanical and electrical parts of the switch? Only thing I can think of without a diagram or parts blowup, is that something is pushing a stop off position, preventing it from working. Does your steering column lock work?

Oh Yeah, does your door chime work properly? does it ring with the key in and the door open, then stop when you pull the key? My mechanical lock is bad, so my chime goes on with the door, key in or out.

Found it . notice that wen the key goes in it pushes a button in the switch. when i pushed the button with a pen the chime goes off. The key started spinning regardless in the switch was mounted or not. So i sprayed cleaner in the keyhole and worked the key in and out and the problem went away
