98 S70 alternator removal

Hello all,

I need some advice on alternator removal.
I was doing the timing and serpentine belt change when I saw that the bearings in my alternator are pretty much shot.
I have tried to remove the alternator but I was not able to break free the third screw behind the alternator, so I gave it up... As the space there is very limited I was simply not able to put enough torque on that.
Is there any trick how and from where to slide in a wrench or breaker bar or magic wand?

Get yourself a metal tube just big enough to cover the handle on the ratchet so you can extend the leverage.

The electric department at your local hardware store has those galvanized pipes for electric cables, a 2 feet 3/4" one works great and costs a few bucks

I pulled the fan assembly off the back of the radiator to give more access. You should be able to do that without draining the radiator or removing cooler lines.

I already tried the pipe trick, but I simply did not had enough room to rotate it.
I will try the fan removal, as it is really only a 5 min additional time.
@ Scott: you mean that I do not have to drain the coolant to get the alternator out?

I pulled out my ECU to give me more space. Make sure you disconnect the battery and tap the brake before you take it out though.

Did not need to drain the radiator. It is tight, but take your time. Just did this on my 2000 V70R to work on something.

thanks for the video, I have already used that as a guideline (as all your other vids as well ).
Unfortunately my problem was that I was not able to break the third screw loose...
